Friday #10 : Biz Day!

Hola Folks! You know I was wondering what is the purpose of this...like what is the purpose of life? If you think about it you live like a programmed robot, same boring routine day in and day out. But then I think it's the little moments that make life joyful. You don't necessarily have to think about it, you just have to live it and make the most out of every moment. Perhaps you could give me a better reasoning down in the comments? I will very much appreciate it. Anyways, let's get to business. Literally.

Q1. It's the age of AI. Every industry is now incorporating Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning based frameworks to grow in a unprecedented manner. As such, indigenous IT giant Wipro will offer its artificial intelligence framework, 'E' to clients as a part of their new strategy to revamp digital tech-based solutions. Wipro had shared in a report that E is essentially a part of 'H'. It was developed to help companies ensure that their consumer-facing solutions are transparent, ethical and unbiased. E works on removing any potential bias from algorithms. For instance, banks can use it to eliminate bias while processing loan applications. It does so by masking irrelevant data and use relevant factors such as purchase and payment history. Now H is a basically a cognitive computing system developed by Wipro and announced in 2016. Its name is a reference to IBM's 'Watson'. I must say, they well thought the selection of names! Give me E and H.

Q2. With the rise in cassette recorder popularity, the British Phonographic Industry feared that people being able to record music from the radio  onto cassettes would cause a decline in record sales.
To prevent this, they ran an anti-copyright infringement campaign in 1980, the slogan of which was Home Taping Is Killing Music. The logo of  the campaign consisted of a Jolly Roger formed from the silhouette of a  cassette, with the words “And It's Illegal” written below.
In what can be considered sheer irony, where would one have come  across this logo?

Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), now known as 'BSE Limited', is the oldest stock exchange in the entire Asia.
X comes from a Marathi word which means "a broker" .
X is the address of the Bombay Stock Exchange which is in the Phiroze Jeejeebhoy Towers. There are several financial firms and institutions in that street

When Bombay Stock Exchange was moved to this new location at the intersection of Bombay Samāchār Marg and Hammam Street, the street next to the building was renamed as X. It is often used as a metonym for the entire Indian financial establishment. What is X?

Q5. Though the man most associated with Z is Schultz -- who's been with the company on and off since the '80s -- it was actually started by three dudes without an MBA between them. That'd be Bowker (a writer), Siegl (a history teacher), and Jerry Baldwin (an English teacher). Wanting to bring the best coffee to Seattle, they opened the first Z in 1971 in Pike Place Market. It only sold beans at first, but that would change once Schultz stepped in.
The three were inspired to sell high-quality coffee beans and equipment by coffee roasting entrepreneur Alfred Peet after he taught them his style of roasting beans.
The company took the name of the chief mate in the book Moby-Dick: Z, after considering “Cargo House” and “Pequod”.
Bowker recalls that Terry Heckler, with whom Bowker owned an advertising agency, thought words beginning with the initial letters of Z were powerful.
Because aroma is so crucial to the Z experience, Schultz laid down the law early on: "Nothing can interfere with the smell of their freshly-ground coffee". The stores banned smoking in the late 1980s, years before it became commonplace; employees are asked not to wear perfume or cologne; and under no circumstances is pastrami to be stored anywhere on the premises.
The average Z customer visits the store 6 times per month while a loyal 20% of customers go to the stores 16 times per month. Give Z.

  1. There's a philosophical theory called existentialism. According to that theory, being precedes essence. That means, there's no inherent purpose of life. We do not exist for a purpose. We are not born for some predestined goal. Meaning is a sweater you have to knit for yourself. The only truth of life is that nobody knows. What's enjoyable is brilliant accidents, every now and then, on our way to oblivion along with the universe.

  2. Very well put. If my memory serves well, the idea was given by Gabriel Marcel. Had seen a question on it few months back but didn't understand it then. Thanks for this reasoning 😊
