Wednesday 17: Forts and Palaces of India

Today, let's walk through the palaces and forts of Indian Royalty. World might have percieved India as an underdeveloped country but I am sure after seeing these luxurious palaces and grand forts, we all would think twice. I hope you all show love. Without further delays, let's start.

Q.1. Though not built in any capital per se, this fort remained as the power center for a very influential empire of Indian History. Accounts say, that though it was supposed to be built from stone, it not being issued by the King or not being in the capital led to its construction half done from bricks. Which Fort?






c.) Shanivaar Waada
Located in Pune, the palace was built under the hereditary Peshwa as their seat. Though Chhatrapati ruled from Satara, it was the Pune which controlled the Maratha Empire.



Q.2. Designed in the Indo-Saracenic style by architect Charles Mant, the interiors of the grandiose home are reminiscent of several European schools of architecture. 

Interistingly, Mant, who was a perfectionist, committed suicide after he believed that he had miscalculated the height of the supporting pillars and came to the conclusion that the palace would collapse soon after. Over a a century later, the mansion still stands. 

Guess the palace, believed to be one of the largest private residences ever built.






b.) Laxmi Vilas Palace
Built under Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1890, it is one of the most iconic places of Baroda especially with a world-class golf course beside it.



Q.3. Built-in 1874, This is Jai Vilas Palace. At a time in history, it housed an estranged Mughal Emperor, effectively controlling the throne of Delhi, the so-called center of India. The current owners of the palace have also in a sense being in the National Arena and around the power.

Who or Which dynasty owns the palace.





a.) Scindia Royal Family of Gwalior

Located in Gwalior, the palace still houses Scindias, who have always been in the National Political scenario ever since Independence with current scion being the charismatic Jyotiraditya Scindia.



Q.4. This is one of the most famous palaces of West Bengal, heavily inspired by Buckingham Palace. It is called Victor Jubilee Palace, How do we popularly know it?

Hint: Name matches with a certain domestic cricket tournament.







b.) Cooch Behar Palace



Q.5. Identify this iconic palace of Tripura, the traditional capital of the Manikya Dynasty. Yes, the same dynasty which gave us composers like SD Burman and RD Durman.
