Q1) On 18th August 2020, the 75th death anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was observed, with several politicians across all spectrum paying their tributes to the legendary freedom fighter. However, controversies have emerged over his death even in the recent times.

Original claim states that Netaji died in a plane crash on 18 August 1945, in Taiwan. The Figgess report of 1946 confirmed the same. However many speculations arose soon. Journalist Hugh Purcell, Dr. Purabi Ray, etc have claimed that Bose was in the refuge of the Soviet Union afterward.

There is another theory which claims that Netaji Bose escaped and returned to India, and lived as 'X'
In 1985, Bose’s niece Lalitha obtained the old man’s trunks. On searching the trunks, Lalitha claimed that the trunk had Bose’s letters and photographs and that the 'X' was none other than her uncle Netaji Bose.
What was this alias 'X' ?

Q3) For the 1939 elections of the President of Congress, Subhash announced his candidature knowing that he would be opposed. By this time, Nehru was on a long holiday in Europe. When he returned in 1938, Gandhi suggested him to announce his name as a candidate. But he declined and suggested the name of Maulana Azad. But Maulana Azad withdrew his name and then new name came up was of X, an Andhra leader. But Subhash was not sure of his win. The result was declared on January 29, 1939 and Subhash secured 1580 Votes. X got 1377 votes, thus Subhash winning by a narrow but clear margin.

But the defeat of X was taken by Gandhi as a personal blow. He said “
… I am glad of his (Subhash’s) victory….and since I was instrumental in inducing X not to withdraw his name after Maulana Azad Sahib done so, the defeat is more mine than his….”.

Gandhi said that Bose was president in his own right. He should form his own working committee and run the congress. Gandhi said that

“…after all Subhash Babu is not the enemy of our country…he has suffered for it”. In His opinion, his is the most forward and boldest policy and programme….the minority can only wish him all the best”..

In March 1939, Congress met at annual session at Tripuri near Jabalpur.
Prior to this session, Bose fell ill (which may be a psychological reaction to the stress). In this session, when Subhash was brought to the dais on stretcher, one of the congressmen fanned “Why don’t you check whether he has any onions under his armpits” (Onions when kept under armpits raise the temperature of the body).

Such was the disastrous division between Subhash and Gandhi & his followers. Next Month, Subhash resigned from Congress and now he was on an entirely different path. The place was filled by Y. Give X and Y.

Q4) The Indian Legion (German: Indische Legion), officially the Free India Legion (German: Legion Freies Indien) or 950th (Indian) Infantry Regiment (German: Infanterie-Regiment 950 (indisches)), was a military unit raised during the Second World War initially as part of the German Army and later the Waffen-SS from August 1944. Intended to serve as a liberation force for British-ruled India, it was made up of Indian prisoners of war and expatriates in Europe. Because of its origins in the Indian independence movement, it was known also as the "Tiger Legion", and the "Azad Hind Fauj". As part of the Waffen-SS it was known as the Indian Volunteer Legion of the Waffen-SS (German: Indische Freiwilligen Legion der Waffen-SS).

Following its formation, the FIL adopted four key resolutions: 1. Jai Hind would be the official salutation;2. Jana Gana Mana would be national anthem; 3. Hindustani would be the national language. What was the fourth?
