1. The river is named after Ghulam Rasool X, a Ladakhi explorer of Kashmiri descent, who first explored the course of the river. In 1899, he was part of a British expedition team that was exploring the areas to the north of the Chang Chenmo valley, when he ran into this previously unknown river valley. This river later joins Shyok River to form one of the upstream tributaries of Indus River.
